Andy Mac Reports Results from the Quarterfinals and Consolations:

Well it was a mixed result for Harvard in the quaterfinals, but generally what Jay termed a "good round of wresling". At the end of the day's action Harvard was in 4th place in the team standings behind the usual nemesis: Penn,Lehigh & Cornell. The Crimson had six wrestlers in the semis and 2 more alive in the wrestlebacks. Matt Picarsic, Kevin Kurtz, Joey Killar, Ed Mosely, Pat O'Donnell (yes that's right), and Dawid Rechul were still in the championship hunt. Nick Picarsic and Max Odom were very much alive in the wrestlebacks having rolled up their last opponents.

To Summarize by weight clases:

125: Brandon Rhoades lost in the quarters to Bruce Kelly of Lehigh 7-2 (unfortunately a representative score of the match ) and then lost a squeaker (their first match this year, at the IVY tournament, won by Brandon, was just as close) to Rucci from Penn 8-6 in the first wrestleback. After giving up a TD and escaping, Brandon hit a nice cutback on a Rucci shot to score 2 and 2 to lead 5-2 but then gave up a penalty point (clasping) and a reversal to end the first period tied 5-5. Rucci scored a TD in the third to seal the win. All in all it was a gallant attempt by Rhoades who was coming back from a severe hand laceration that had already reopened once.

133: For the third time in three years (he's a Jr) Matt is wrestling in the semifinals by virtue of his resounding 15-2 victory over Jeff Beverly of Rutgers. Tomorrow he faces his arch rival Jason Nagle in the semis. He lost to Nagle in overtime in last years semi enroute to his 3rd place finish. Matt looks to be fully recovered from early season knee surgery and it should be a good one tomorrow.

141: Matt's brother Nick, one of three Crimson freshman still alive in the tourney, lost to Rutgers Greg Austin 8-3 in his quaterfinal match before beating the fifth seeded Joe Clark of Princeton in his 1st consolation bout 7-0. He faces the 8th seeded David Dies in his bid to place tomorrow. As he has done all year long, Nick continues to provide the Crimson valuable,(there's no one else here!) consistent, good quality wrestling at this weight.

149: In the biggest disapointment for the Crimson, Max lost a heartbreaker to Mercado from Brown 7-6. Max as you probably recall, had trounced the same Mercado in the dual earlier 10-1. Max lead early in the match with a dazzling TD (that guy is quick!) but gave up an escape and a takedown right before getting an escape to end the first period tied at 3. Mercado chose down (not sure where he got this idea) and was ridden the whole period. Max chose down for the third an escaped to lead 4-3 with another point for riding time in the bag. But Mercado scored two takedowns in the last minute to pull out the win. Max came back with a vengeance and beat Adam Webb of Bucknell 20-4 for the technical fall. Tomorrow Max meets the loser of the Bernd-Gough semi. As it stands may may well have a chance to avenge his lost to Mercado as Mercado wrestles Esposito in the other semi. The controversial 2nd seed (the seeding that is) at this weight, Forster of Rutgers, was summarily pinned in the quarters(for the second time this year) by Bernd of Princeton (who Max had majored in the dual). Max is still in the milling here for third place and a possible wild card for the nationals.

157: Kevin looks finally to be recovered from his shoulder injury and looks be back in his form of last year. Kevin avenged an earlier dual meet lost to the 4th seeded Chris Vitale of Lehigh beating him 4-3 to earn a spot in the semis against Matter of Penn. While Kevin will be considered a serious underdog here keep in mind that the #2 nationally ranked Springman (at 174) came with in a whisker of getting pinned in the semis...

165: Joey looks to on the top of his game routing a solid Jim Stanec of Cornell 13-3 with couple of cradles for back points. Next up he has Greg Parker of Princeton who he routed 15-1 earlier this year. Parker upset the much heralded Brian Pitzer in his quarterfinal match. Joey looks likely to to meet Travis Doto in the finals in what may be the Marquee match of the tournament (Joey is ranked 5 and Doto 8th nationally).

174: Ed Mosely continued his conservative methodical path through the draw here, defeating Shawn Thomas of Syracuse. Thomas was noteworthy for having 23 pins in 26 matches coming into this bout. Make that 23 in 27 now. Next up Ed has the familiar Tucceri of Cornell (he's at least 2-0 against him lifetime). A victory there gives him a probable rematch against Penn's Springman who survived a scare in his quarterfinal match. This would be the highest nationally ranked bout of the tournament with the 2nd & 4th ranked wrestlers.

184: The cinderella kid Pat O'Donnell does it again. By handily beating the third seed Joey Hess of Army 6-2, Pat has a semifinal match with Brown's seventh seed Karl Rittger. And how O'Donell loves those Brown guys; this year alone Pat is 3-0 against Brown having already beaten their 165, 174 & 197lb EIWA entrants! This year Pat has rapidly improved while valiantly plugging the Crimson lineup up top wherever needed. What can this guy do at Heavy Weight? Go get'em Pat!

197: In his wrestlebacks Reggie went 1-1 defeating Joe Gillespie of F&M before losing a close (of course) one to Lolli-Ghetti of Lehigh. Like Pat, Reggie has filled in the Crimson lineup wherever needed while weighing much less than most of his opponents. Look for great things from this guy in the future.

HVY: Dawid is in the Semis against his old nemesis Seth Charles of Cornell. He got there by reversing an earlier season defeat (in the ESU tournament) to Rich Koehler of ESU 8-3 in the quarters. Dawid looks to be figuring this heavy weight style out and looks to make some noise tomorrow.

Andy's Reports from the Finals

125: Kelly, Lehigh Defeats Sluyter, ESU 6-4 No 1 seeded Sluyter runner up for second year in a row.

133: DiRubbo, Brown Defeats Nagle, Penn 13-9 in a see saw bout. DiRubbo got out to big lead and held off comeback from Nagel with TD in last 5 seconds.

141: Goldstein, Lehigh beats New, Cornell 4-2. Guirichich from Penn got a questionable wildcard here (primarily because the top 12 at nationals are stacked at this weight).

149: Esposito, Lehigh handily defeats Gough, Penn 16-6. ** MAX ODOM RECEIVES WILCARD ** Max came storming back from his defeat to Mercardo (who finished sixth) with a Tech fall, two majors, and a dramatic first period pin of Berman from Cornell to place third.

157: Matter, Penn Dominates Urbinelli, Cornell 6-1. Matter wins the Fletcher Award (4x champ), & MOW

165: In a brilliant match, Killar, Harvard defeats Doto of Lehigh 6-5. Takedown by Doto with 16 seconds left makes match seem closer than it was.

174: In an eerie repeat of their Midlands match, Springman, Penn pins Ed Mosely with a pin from the nuetral position. (Springman led 5-0 at the time.) 3 wrestlers at this weight got wildcards.

184: Rohn, Lehigh, beat Rittger, Brown, 11-5. Rittger beat Harvards O'Donnell in the semis with the help of a controversial stalling call, 4-3.

197: In a yawner, Anderson of Cornell beat Woodruff of Navy 1-0. Fickell in third here got a wildcard to nationals.

HVY: Bada, from Penn once again beat Rechul by 1 point, 3-2. Bada tiring at the end was aided by injury time for a cut on Rechul near the end of the bout. Three HWYs got wildcards here.
