CRIMSON MAT NEWS, 1/24/06

hope everyone is doing well since the last time we gave you an update. We are almost finished with the dreaded final exams. Once they are complete, its full steam ahead into our Ivy Season and post season tournaments. The team is doing well and has been doing a great job getting their workouts in during this time. Here is a recap of our past few competitions:

The Midlands: December 29-30

We took 6 wrestlers out to The Midlands immediately after the holiday. Bobby Latessa (149), Andrew Flanagan (157), Mike Baria (165), Joe Bechtold (174), Louis Caputo (184), and Bode Ogunwole (hwt). All six wrestlers wrestled well and got some valuable experience in one of the toughest tournaments in the country. The highlight was Bode’s 4th place finish. This was the second year in a row that Bode has placed in the top 4 of this tournament. For more details on the tournament and standings, go to:

The Lonestar Duals: January 7

Our duals down in Texas marked the return of Tri-captain, Max Meltzer at 141, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. We went 1-2 but had some very good individual performances throughout the day, highlighted by Meltzer’s pin of returning All American, Michael Keefe of Tennessee Chattanooga. This proves that Max is well on his way for greatness in March. Robbie Preston (133) unfortunately suffered a hamstring injury which hurt us in team scoring, but he should be back for our important duals and end of the year. For more details, go to:

What’s Next?

On Saturday, January 28th, the 11th ranked Lehigh Mountain Hawks come to town for a 10:30 AM showdown. Also, later on that same day, the Crimson will wrestler The United States Military Academy at 5:00 PM at the Malkin Athletic Center. In between our duals, there will be a big high school match featuring Hudson H.S. and Minuteman H.S. at 2:30 PM. This will be a great event for all involved!

Homecoming/Parents Weekend

In a rare stretch of home dual meets, we will have our Homecoming/Parents weekend on February 3-4 where we have 3 duals. On Friday evening at 7:00 PM, the Crimson will take on Princeton University.

On Saturday, the Crimson will battle Penn University at 2:00 PM then American University at 4:00 PM.

There will be a Friends of Harvard Wrestling dinner following the American match at Dillon Field House at 6:30 PM. All are welcome to attend.

Final Home Dual

We finish up our home stand on Friday, February 10th against cross town rival, Boston University at 7:00 PM.

EIWA’s and NCAA’s

The 2006 EIWA Tournament will be held at Lehigh University on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5. Ticket information will follow.

The 2006 NCAA Tournament promises to be a good one this year with 4 of our wrestlers ranked in the top 15 at their prospective weight classes. This year’s tournament is being held in Oklahoma City, OK. Information on the tournament can be found at http://www.okcallsports.org/ncaawrestling/.

Friends of Harvard Wrestling Update

We are having our annual Friends of Harvard Wrestling meeting at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 4th in the conference room at the Malkin Athletic Center. This will be right before our matches with Penn and American University. All are welcome to discuss some important goals and initiative for the future of the wrestling program. If you are coming to the matches, please make an effort to attend the meeting.

We are currently $13,000 short of our goal of $60,000 for our Friends Budget. If you haven’t contributed this year, go to CLICK HERE TO SUPPORT HARVARD WRESTLING. Thanks to all who have helped us thus far. You are making a difference!!

Hope to see you in Cambridge!
