Season Greetings from Harvard Wrestling

We wish you all a very happy holiday season. Things are wrapping up for us here before we break for the holiday. We had a good start of the season which saw as many as 5 freshmen and 4 sophomores in the starting lineup. They all got a tremendous experience in the ESU Open and Las Vegas Invitational which will definitely pay dividends later on in the season.

It’s been an exciting Fall with the endowment of the Head Coaching position. Through the help of the Friends of Harvard Wrestling, we were able to create a weight facility for the wrestling team in a spare locker room directly off the wrestling room. It is a fabulous facility and will definitely contribute to our success down the road.

Our paper newsletter is currently at the printer and will be out shortly. Until then, I wanted to share some news and

Harvard Wrestler In Iraq

Former Harvard Wrestler, Lt. Vincent Tuohey ’01, was featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal today (12/15/04) in an article about ROTC at Ivy League Schools (“At Ivy League Schools, ROTC, Long Banned, Plots a Comeback.”) Here is an excerpt from this article:

Lt. Vincent Tuohey has led a platoon of 30 soldiers patrolling the deadly road to Baghdad's airport. He has dodged bombs, grenades and gunfire. No one doubts his bravery, but he still gets strange looks when he relaxes in the barracks wearing his college T-shirt. "You went to Harvard?" a soldier once asked. "Why did you join the Army?"

Lt. Tuohey, the Army lieutenant in Baghdad who graduated from Harvard in 2001, draws inspiration from his great-uncle, a U.S. Army first lieutenant who died in France during World War II.

"I've learned more in Iraq than I learned during four years at Harvard," Lt. Tuohey says in a telephone interview. "There's no greater honor than leading men in defense of your country."

Future Competitions

We will break for the holidays on December 21st. Our next competition will The Midlands at Northwestern University on December 29-30. This is a prestigious competition in which 5 of our wrestlers will be competing. Pre-seeds can be found at http://nusports.collegesports.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/120204aac.html. Co-captain, Max Meltzer, who is taking this year out of school and will be competing unattached, is currently pre-seeded #4 at 141. Bode Ogunwole is currently pre-seeded #5 at HWT. The rest of the team will resume the season down at the Lonestar Duals on January 8th in Arlington, TX. This has been a great competition for us in the past. Specifics on this competition can be found at http://www.lonestarduals.com/.
