Las
Vegas Invitational
The
Crimson wrestling team was led by three placewinners
in Robbie Preston
'07 (133 lbs.), Louis Caputo '09 (184 lbs.) and Bode
Ogunwole '07 (hwt).
All three wrestlers made it to the semi-finals in
this prestigious
tournament, only to very close bouts to higher ranked
opponents. In
Preston's case, Robbie had the #1 ranked wrestler
in the country (and
returning NCAA finalist) Shawn Bunch from Edinboro,
on the ropes as he had a
4-3 lead with 10 seconds left in the match, only surrender
a hard fought
take-down in the end. Robbie's next bout pitted him
against the #2 ranked
wrestler in the country where once again he went blow-for-blow
but ended up
falling just short. Robbie ended up placing 5th and
obviously proved that
he can mix it up with the top wrestlers in his weight
class.
Caputo
is the quite one of the group-all he does is win!
He showed no signs
of freshmen jitters as he knocked off some higher
ranked opponents along the
way. His semi loss was to the #3 ranked wrestler in
the country from
Illinois, Pete Friedl, who also was the top ranked
wrestler in the
tournament. Louis ended up placing 4th. Did I mention
that Louis is just a
freshman??
Our
"Nigerian Nightmare" (Bode) looked as good
as ever throughout the
tournament. He lost to the #3 ranked wrestler in the
country from Arizona
State, 3-1. Bode also bounced back for a 5th place
finish amongst some very
stiff competition.
All
in all, the team wrestled well. There were some other
bright spots
along the way. We are still a young team and this
tournament definitely
opened some eyes of the team members.proving to some
that they can compete
against the best and showing others what they need
to do to get there.
